absolute beginner needs lens advice

I know it's not a professional grade camera but if it can't do what my old mid-level point and shoot camera can than what''s the point? I't not like I'm trying to shoot pictures of the Kentucky Derby for sports illistrated, I'll just trying to take pictures of an 11-year old and the county junior fair.

It's far better than your point & shoot. I think we're setting off on the wrong foot here...the suggestions such as orb9220's are the lenses for you. They're good. They're very good.

No way of second-guessing budget. You might buy your son a Porsche for his 21st. How can I know what's pricey.

I don't mean to be indignant and like I said I know it's not a professional grade camera but for no more than I need it to do you are saying that I need a high performance camera and lenses that cost thousands of dollars. It is a little frustrating.
