irish has a lot of good options in the used world. Previous generation SLRs are still good, they're just not the latest & greatest any more. But you still get the big sensor and good optics! 6MP is more than enough.

Only trouble is the kit lens is not long enough, unless he is in the ring (jumping) eventing 55mm is no where near leng enough

That, and shutter count could be important on used gear as the entry-level gear has somewhat limited shutter life.

Unfortunately, Nikon's are about the only ones that accurate write shutter actuation info to the EXIF data fields.

Buying any other brand of used camera the shutter actuations are just rough estimates at best.
