Interesting how the af assist light only works when the center focus point is selected. Does the speedlight's assist work with any point selected Thanks!

Likely because only the center AF point is the only one sensitive enough (cross-type) for AF Assist to work.

It helps of you specify what camera you are referring to.

On my cameras & Speedlite flashes, the AF assist beam is a pattern that matches up (somewhat) with the AF point grid. So yes, it does work with other points.

But also note that AF assist only work in the 'one shot' AF mode...probably similar on a Nikon in AF-S mode.

I have done some research and found out that the on camera af assist will only trigger when you have the center point selected (point af) or you have the af area set to auto. The Nikon flash however has the cross grid so the center horizontal and center vertical points can all be selected with af assist. Geez must be Nikon's way of telling you to get a speedlight.
