I would increase the brightness and contrast in a photo editing program, that would make a world of difference.

I think just a little more DOF (just to get the top edge of the ace in focus) would help a lot. Otherwise, I like it.

these are really my first tries with a DSLR camera.

better focus points i would say, closer up, so the A and K take up the whole frame or somethin

I agree with O|||||||O now that you have it brighter and increased the contrast on the next shot it needs just a tit more DOF... nice idea though

to put more depth of field: Should I set my camera to "AV" and increase the number to about maybe 11.0?

The 2nd one is better, but I'd go even more, to make the cards look white (they still look kind of gray). I hope you don't mind, but I took a quick try:

I used the curves tool in Gimp to maximize the dynamic range and also increase contrast. I also added some sharpening. You can probably get the same results in your RAW converter.
