Am I going in the right direction with editing?

I just got into photography, and I'm using a Powershot SD1300. I have been trying out some editing but I wanted to know if some of the stuff I've edited looks bad and over edited, or if it looks ok.

Without seeing the originals, it's hard to tell.

I made the mistake of saving over the originals. Won't do that again, but I took those about a week ago. On both of those I added some contrast and brightness, and increased the saturation in Photoshop. Do they look bad?

Honestly, too me, yes... too much. No details in the shadows at all. I like vivid colors, but they don't work on the first one.
