I went down to Detroit the other day with my camera. I am new to photography and need all the advice/criticism i can get.

Well, lukeS, welcome to the forum. This one is not too bad for a start, but there are probably a few things that you can think about. You are, I suspect, the victim of "haze" on the river, probably from the city. A polarizer will help with that to some extent. You also have a main part of your subject - the bridge - right in the middle of the image. You might want to check out the "rule of thirds" regarding the placement of subjects/objects in a photo. I would also clone out the bird in the left centre part of the image and the dark post, or whatever it is, in the water, on the centre, left part of the image. HTH.
