In the first pic I framed up the bird in the 3rds position. In the 2nd pic I wanted to show the detail in it's feathers, etc. so I bypassed the 3rds rule and got closer to the bird and framed it closer to center to achieve my goal.

I like them both. I like portraits to see the details of the subject. But I also like to see the subject in its environment. So, for me, it is not one or the other. Nice shots.
