Another Dog Shoot...

Meet Lou. A cute little wiener dog that's far too big for her britches.

I felt more comfortable with this shoot since it was on my turf, and I made some adjustments from the last shoot. Feel free to pick nits, all input (well almost all input) is greatly appreciated. Feel free to pick nits, it will only help me to get better. And before you say it, I realize I shot a bit shallow on 2, but I still really like the shot, so I'm keeping it.

A bit shallow on 2. I don't like it not one bit...of course I am joking, I think it's a great shot and the depth helps bring the eyes into the viewer's focus.

I love these shots, and I bet my wife will want to paint 4. I hope that's ok.
What a sweet old pup.

I do like number 1 but the last one woul dhave got that mantle if you were able to have the dogs eye looking right at you. So on just that little point you for me have missed it a little.
But an overall look of these I think you have got a good set of shots.

Thanks! It's tough to give dogs posing direction. she seemed to do well enough if I dangled treats in front of her... but new surroundings had a lock on her attention. I may have one that fits that bill... there are several more shots, these are just the ones I got around to last night. She was a fun dog to shoot... she is so tiny! It was fun watching her play with my Bernese Mountain Dog after the camera was put away.

It might just be me... or it might be because the dog is so dark, but I felt like the light could really benefit from more diffusion. It feels too harsh and localized.

I've done it once because thats what the client wanted, but I stand firm on my belief that dogs do not belong in a studio environment! Get them outside, grab a ball and do what dogs do! Get a stick, a bone, a frisbee, something!

#3 is my favorite, the rest are too up close for my liking. I agree with the lighting just feels "off".

Thanks! I guess I'm in the other camp. I love the idea of dogs in a studio, that's not to say we won't get outside when April finally decides to sober up and wash winter away... (things are still dirty and brown here.) It's just to say that I will have several dogs in a studio setting. It makes me happy.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your criticisms! Honestly I like the lighting as it is, but am willing to take a closer look. Is there anything in particular that jumps out as the lighting being off? I wonder if I burned in the highlights on the wet nose and tongue a bit if that would help...

I very much prefer the dog's mouth closed as in #3. A dog will pant if the studio is too warm or if the dog is anxious or nervous. Something to work on.
