After months of hard work, I finally got the results back today from an internship I applied for in Michigan, I didn't get it. It may seem like a paltry thing, but this summer fellowship would have been such a huge help for me in terms of getting into graduate school somewhere in the next few years. Not only would it have been a fantastic way of networking, but it would have also been a meaningful summer spent doing undergraduate research, something I'm incredibly passionate about. I worked my ass off for it, put all my eggs in this one basket, just hoping it would pay off, and had been waiting patiently for weeks to hear back. I put everything I had into my application, poured my soul into that freaking thing. Normally I'm not one to let disappointments get to me, but damn if this one hasn't.

Here's to hoping that somewhere another door opened for this one slamming shut in my face. I honestly believe that everything happens for a reason, but this time it's hard to think of what could have been and believe there's any sense in whats happening.

the thing is... Lots of things happen for completely random reasons. Lots of successful people owe their big break to an improbable circumstance. And lots of good, deserving people get hit by unforseeable triple whammies that overwhelm their ability to cope. A measure of our character, is to accept with humility the fortune that we may luck into, and to cope gracefully with adversity when that is what happens to us. Yes, being prepared, and working your tail off to position yourself to be the chosen one is the right thing to do, but who knows what may have been behind the decision? My wise mother (who is now 90 and still going strong) has survived a number of life events where arbitrary decisions meant life or death, and many people around her lost their lives, and yet she managed to find a way to continue on, through many countries, learning new languages out of necessity, and now being the matriarch of a large family. **** happens. That's probably natural law #1. She always told me, no matter how sure you are of something, keep your options open. Be thankful if it breaks your way, and the prepared when it doesn't. I wish you a rapid emotional healing and an effective re-focusing of effort.

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Without exception.

I'm sorry I don't have much more to say, other than to say I am sorry that your goals did not work out the way you were expecting.
Take the time you need to put the disappointment behind you and focus on finding what lies ahead.

I am not an optimist by nature, but I agree with pgriz. I think the biggest life lessons tend to be related to adaptability; learning to roll with the punches, as they say. And as disappointing as this was for you, I'd say never stop trying. Sometimes the journey is more important than the destination.
