Another Model Mayhem shoot, 8/21/2011

I've been having a lot of luck with MM and I'm taking full advantage of it. I recently discovered Nikon high speed flash sync and wanted to do a few practice shots. I'm also practicing in full manual mode, controlling the light on the subject and the background. So we went out in full sun, 11am-1pm, using 1 SB 800. The model was a lot of fun to work with.

Comments, suggestions, critiques are always welcome and appreciated. =)

Getting ready for the shot...

Would have been nice if I didn't clip off her fingers =(, 1/800 with flash at full power 14mm zoom at about 3ft from her face. High speed sync was able to stop motion nicely.

The head space is close on this, but I wanted to show a bit of cleavage.

Expose for the background and drop it 1/2 to 1 stop, first 2 the background is too bright

Yeah I kind of figured that out as the day went on... =) I also found out that shooting in full manual isn't that tough at all. I'm a pro now!! hahahaha

I agree on d-b-j and gsgary's points, lots of blown highlights on those first two. Great setup and compositions though, going to have to try out MM myself now that I'm working more on studio-style work...

I like the lighting on the first two, that must just be me.. most people don't seem to like it at all. What did you shoot in before you tried Manual?

The first two shots were pretty much me messing around with manual mode and checking the histogram. I was shooting in aperture priority before. The primary reason for me to shoot full manual now is to be a bit more creative with flash.

I was thinking more or less like this
