Another Nikon Lens Question

Why does Nikon package the D90 w/ the 18-105mm AF-S lens? What is the purpose of having the focus motor built into the lens as well as in the camera?

Because many people choose to purchase additional lenses. Many of the lenses still produced by Nikon, and those for sale on the used market that remain popular, do not have a focus motor in them.

There are also many third party lenses without motors in them.

So the reason the package a lens with a motor in it is it's a newer lens design with the motor in it that has other advantages (such as quieter focusing, speed, accuracy, manual override).

So I guess it's not so much they put a lens with a motor in it with a camera that doesn't need that lens, it's more they put a motor in the camera so the user has more otpions beyond what came in the kit.

Older Nikkor lenses used the screw-drive system of autofocusing. There are around 25 million or so AF Nikkor lenses and AF-D Nikkor lenses that rely on the in-body AF motor.
It's called backward compatibility. Something Nikon knows a lot about.

I was aware that you could use older Nikon lenses with the D90, which is a main reason I am getting it. Just curious as to know what advantage having a motor in the kit lens would be if the body already had an inbody focus motor.

As the 18-105 is not a D90 lens only and more a general kit lens.
This means more sales to people that have a D40,D60,D3000,D5000 that don't have a in cam motor can take advantage of this lens.

And as the technology becomes cheaper than all new lenses will be AF-S with built in motor. And you will have little options in buying new one without.
