I know I cut off the top of his head, was so busy trying to get the exposure right, forgot to pay attention to composition

The exposure is good - you might lighten it just a little, but not much; you've got good, sharp focus on the face, nice catchlight's in the eyes and a suitably OOF background. Now, on to composition!
