Here's another portrait I did for that job at my school. Comments and criticism appreciated.

It looks more like a snap shot to me rather than an intentional "portrait" persay. The busy background is distracting in my opinion and detracts from the "portrait" stereotype that I am comfortable with. Furthermore, since your not looking at the camera, my eyes are drawn to where yours might be focused on - which of course is off the frame. In short, my eyes are drawn away from the subject and off the photo completely. Lastly, the focus appears to have missed slightly here.

Please take my C&C with a grain of salt. I am in no way, shape and/or form a professional. With that said, my suggestion is to try again.

Cheers!

your editing on the teeth is horribly off, and the skin softening technique looks a little too much.

Other than that, the composition is just ... meh.

Thanks! But like I said, it really wasn't a formal shoot or anything. I also just realized that something went wrong with the processing in aperture and messed up the dodge on the teeth.... oops:)

To me, it looks horribly snapshot-ish. The dodging on the teeth...eh. Well the 2 teeth dont match--then you have the single spot on the 3rd,by accident. Maybe use another teeth whitening method?

The biggest problem is that it is completely OOF and the composition is blah. I would advise hitting the delete button unless you just want to keep this for personal memory type reasons. One of the hardest things to learn is when to be able to say to yourself "this is no good and overprocessing is just going to make it worse - Delete." Your hard drive disk space is probably worth more to you than this shot is. I do not say that to be overly harsh or come off as a d*ck. I am being completely serious when I say that this is something that is hard to accept especially as a beginner.

The post processing looks bad as others said. Instead of dodging, try desaturating the teeth slightly next time if you are trying to whiten them.

Formal shoot or not, you asked for C+C.

Okay, so Olympus beat me to the punch, but this type of shot is often misconstrued.

From Wikipedia:
A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.

Sorry... looks like a stalker snapped the shot when she was not looking.

Better luck next time.
