I'm not sure why a doctor would have you take over the counter supplements or whatever in case this turns out to be stress related. I'd expect he'd wait for results from the specialist, then possibly prescribe something if that's what it turns out to be (and if lung problems like asthma are ruled out).
I have adult onset asthma, developed it years ago (always had allergies as a kid) and was referred to see a pulmonary specialist.
You might if you haven't already look up the doctors and make sure they're licensed, find out their backgrounds, etc. My 'family' doctor for example is also an internist and is board certified, you should be able to find out that sort of info. on any doctor.
I wouldn't mess with this, I'd make sure to see a licensed physician and get checked out.
