Just wondering what the point of the black cutter over the photographer is?? . it seems strange to be using this, while the lens does not even have a lens hood on.
is this just the same idea as holding an umbrella over the photographer? to make it easier for them to look through the viewfinder and view the back on the camera maybe?

I'm guessing it is there exactly because the lens does not have a lens hood on. It is keeping extraneous light from entering the lens at bad angles and refracting.

just strange the assistant has the lens hood around her arm. and the cutter seems to be almost behind the lens and more over the photographer. but you could be right, thanks for the reply

He probably couldn't see through the viewfinder due to the glare coming in from the side. It happens to me from time to time and I've learned to cover my eye and viewfinder with one hand, but it would be much better to have an assistant hold a piece of material up to form a shade.

Could be an issue if he's using stacked filters with the hood, or that the hood is missing x amount of stray light, etc.

Looks like the assistant is merely an oversized lens hood to me haha.
