For still life photography are there any nifty tricks I could learn about to get the absolute best quality possible or any other camera addons that would be suggested?

I am already using the lowest iso setting. Exposure time is no issue.

Should I look into HDR, merging lots of images? Also any unconventional ideas? (apart from the obvious like white balance, lighting).
The only requirement is that I wouldn't have to manually choose the parts of each image to use (ie. from lots of hdr images).

Using Nikon D5100 DSRL.

Any ideas greatly appreciated :)

Read up on lighting. Light is what will add drama and there are various light set ups that will give the same still life set up a different feel. Try the Strobist website for some free info.

Thanks, yeah that's definitely something I'm also looking into. Are there any full spectrum led component modules around yet so I can make some custom light boxes?

No idea... I haven't used LED lights for photography. If you do, be sure to let us see your results!
