I think most of the cat is out of focus (if not all ) and it's a pity because I really like the pic. I tried a couple of gimp's enhace filters (sharpen mask and others) but it din't help much.

Any way to improve this?

P.S. I know: Go back and take it in focus. Too late for that. BTW, this was not the only OOF picture I took of that very cat in a space of a few seconds. This is simply the best one :blushing:

Thanks.

"Go back and take it again"
Is - unfortunatly - the best advice possible. You might have luck running sharpening in stages whilst resizing in steps. Ie sharpen at fullsize - then resize to say 2000pixels on the longest side - sharpen and repeat down till you get to websize.

That combined with using layermasks to ensure that only the cat is the part you are sharpening (because that is the softer point and you don't want to oversharpen the stick) might help get it to look a little better. However an out of focus shot is one of those things - like motion blur - which is either impossible or very hard to (convincingly) fix in editing; and even then it's likely to take a very long time to do.

Seriously, sobolik? The OP is admitting they are fully aware of the OOF cat and you're saying it's fine? It's fine for a snapshot in a photo album maybe, but anything over 4x6 is gonna look like junk printed. IF a 4x6 looks okay. I suggest a reshoot, but it is a cute pic and I like the comp. Good luck OP!

Sometimes a re-take just isn't possible...

I did a quick run through in Gimp and came up with...

What I did... Auto White Balance, adjusted Level a bit, threw a little sharpness filter at it...

I think it improved the oof issue a little bit...

It did. Thank you.

I have to keep on practising with the gimp.

I blurred the background a bit but seems i selected a bit of the branch above the cat's head but you get the idea...

There you have it, but your habitual rant and ridicule mode won't allow you to see something for what it is and leave it at that. " it is a cute pic and I like the comp" There is a lot of habitual rant and ridicule modes on the various forums. Maybe that is why so many beginners come and go.
