I found this lens like new for 200.00 locally and I am picking it up after work. Just curious if anyone had anything positive/negative to say. Just thought I would give the 100mm F2 a try. I havent ever heard much about it before. I dont really need it, I am just a gear whore. What I really want is the 24-105L or 28-70L, but I have that range in a sigma too.

VERY tempting at that price for a 100mm f/2 prime lens. Dirk Vermierre shot the Canon 50/1.4 and 100/2 as an outdoor "pair" and did lovely work with them; I've seen a few hundred pics from the 100/2 that he shot, and it has a nice "selective" look to it that shorter lenses cannot match. He was using it on a 5D. Geeze...two bills...you just gotta have it at that price!

What is the retail of that lens?

I ask because if it sounds too good to be true you may want to pack some heat... Or something...

I love my 50mm 1.4, so I was hoping I would like the 100mm F2 as well. He has a 24-105 F4IS as well for 750...I am super temped, but I have a 4 day photography conference next weekend, so I spent my photography allowance for the month! lol I can spare 200 for this though, 750 would be stretching it. Retail looks to be about 500.00, the guy said it was barely used.

Yeah, man, definitely snap it up...the 24-105 is a fair price, but the 100/2 is an absolute steal!

$300 off for a barely used lens? Sounds a bit fishy. Ask him for the serial number and tell him you have a friend at the police department who is going to run it for you. If he gives you one you should be ok. Just make sure it is at least a reasonably real serial number.

Its not a large town....people are generally pretty honest around here. I have bought most of my photo stuff off craigs list, and lots of other things. Never had an issue. The guy said he will keep it for me until I get out of work, very reasonable guy.

Ryan.. How was that purchase you did on lightroom 3 on CL :)

Damn you have a good memory! I ended up not getting it because after talking to him again it was the student version and still had to go through Adobe. Still going for the 100mm f2 though. Trying to hold back from the 24-105L f4.

A Canon EF 200mm F2? lens for $200? doubtful. Or do you mean it is some off brand but an EOS mount?

CL is a common place to sell stolen items. I have bought an iTouch 32GB for a good price on CL. A few days later the guy who sold it to me said he actually bought it from a kid who stole it from his classmate. Anytime I buy something on CL, I want it well documented. The person name, price, etc.

edited: I realize you titled your post wrong and must mean the 100mm.

I have the Tamron 60mm f/2 and it produces great bokeh for portraits. So I am sure the extra length would isolate your subject even more.

Wow no one mentioned that yet! lol, yes the 100/2. The guy even has the box, anytime someone gives me their web site I am pretty trusting.
