other avenues of lenses.

Sigma has just come out with a few, I don't know about the other third party makers. Nikon lenses should be listed in your manual. I don't shoot the D40/X, but I know it needs the AF-S lenses in Nikon's line. That is the series of lens that has a focus motor in the lens itself. As I mentioned, Sigma now offers a few as well. Actually, the D40 can mount and shoot almost any Nikkor made since 1959, but without AF. Metering is restricted as well, but if you learn to read a Histogram, that is not an issue if your not in aa hurry. You could also use a handheld meter and go old-school. Great way to learn exposure basics.

Sigma: Any HSM lens.

Not sure if tamron make a nikon lens with motor yet. You can forget the others on the list for autofocus though.

Any lens with an IF will work with Auto Focus on the D40(x). Like jstuedle mentioned, you can use non_IF lenses, but you will need to manually focus, and the TTL meter will not work, so it's like old-school K1000 shooting. Great way to understand exposure.
