You do not absolutely "need" a TTL speedlight. In fact, using something that is semi-automatic might actually be a good thing for you and your photography. Some of the older speedlight designs, like the Vivitar 285HV or the Sunpak 383, or the various Metz models, or even some of the pre-2000's models made by Nikon, are actually VERY capable flash units, and have VERY useful calculator or slide-rule style exposure calculators/exposure setting systems. The "old-school" method of telling the flashgun the ISO in use and the lens f/stop in use still WORKS GREAT!!!!!!!!! It works very, very, very well,in fact.
BUT, it does not sell $469 flash units with TTL wireless control...so, the camera makers sell TTL flash units offering wireless control...
According to Popular Photography magazine, one of the main USA gearhead magazines in an article about 10 Secrets About Digital Photography, the editors of the magazine pointed out that, in their opinion, one 'secret' is that with a modern d-slr, it is NOT necessary to have TTL flash to do good flash work.
