Anyone priced new furniture lately? Sofas in particular

I'm in the market for a new sofa and have had my eyes opened. Most of all my previous furniture purchases have been hand-me-downs, used or on the cheap from budget resellers. Mattresses have been the exception. So I'm moving into new diggs soon and wanted a good sofa in the front room that will hopefully be my last or 20 years, whichever comes first. My wants were a 3 cushion in length, leather fabric and recliners on each end. Holy Cowhide Batman!

The first one I looked at has been my favorite so far, really fit the bill with the exception of being powered recliners. Leather was a very subtle suede finish. IMO, they are too slow in operation and something to break down. The reason for the recliners is I'm unsure at this time if any other sitting furniture will be added to the room. A coffee table and perhaps an end table, yeah, but I want a more minimal approach. Sale price on the sofa was nearly $1900, but have gotten them down to $1400 on the same sofa with mechanical recliners. But here's the rub.... 8-10 week wait for delivery.

So is the $1400 price reasonable with such a delay? Perhaps I can talk them down sufficiently on the in stock sofa (sale ends tomorrow) Some of the other sofas that I've seen are in the $1K +/- range, but don't sit or feel as nice.

I bought a new bed & dresser for my daughter a month ago. While we were there, I browsed the sofas too (we need a new one). For a reclining sofa, that's about what they're going for here... There were a lot in the $1000 range, but I don't think they reclined.

Sometimes I wonder how hard it would be to just make my own...lol.

Last chairs we bought were a set of leather with reclining features - something like £50.
Best thing if you want budget is to:

1) Find a van/trailer

2) Find a general auction house/sales/place (note sure what they are rightly called). Typically you can find some second hand or even end of the line stock and because its large and bulky most people don't jump for it (this is especially the case in the smaller country auction houses where items are more random in appearance).


Course it could take weeks or even months before something that you want turns up.

Is it just for the sofa or the set? That seems expensive to me, we spent $800 on the set we bought a few years ago. Www.o.co has some nice sets on it for pretty cheap. I didn't calculate shipping but here is a 3 price set for the same price. There are also 3 price sets on there for $900.

Yes, just about every new furniture purchase I've made in the last 5 years or so (didn't buy anything new before that) comes with a hefty price tag and a long wait/delivery time.
The exceptions being IKEA or buying the showroom display models.

The mark up on these things seems to be pretty high. When they go on sale (or you haggle down the price) you can get a much lower price...or something thrown in. I'm still kicking my self....the wife & I bought a new sofa set and we got a 'free' washer/dryer or 50" (projection) TV. We took the washer/dryer, but then moved less than 2 years later and left the washer/dryer with the house. Spent the next 5 years watching a 27" TV.

Keith and I are moving (FINALLY!) and while his parents are giving us a section of their couch, so we don't need to shop for one for a while, my mother always recommended that he and I look at Value City (Value City Furniture - Factory Direct Savings on Furniture - Value City Furniture Homepage) because they're not as expensive as other places. She says it's the kind of place where you can walk in and love everything, or love nothing... just depends on what they have in. But it's certainly worth a look!

I paid around $1200 for just a loveseat similar to your sofa (reclining and all, with a Dark Brown finish)... so yea.. that sound like a good deal on the sofa. Just got a new bedroom set too.. that was not cheap!

I bought a reclining chair about a month ago and it was delivered 2 days after but they had it in stock. However, last year i bought a sofa and a love seat. The order took about 8 weeks because they didnt had the color i wanted in stock. I think its a normal wait time.

wait time for ours when we wanted a different fabric i think was in the 4-6 week range. prices vary so much with furniture. its hard to say if what your pricing is a good price or not. ive seen couches anywhere from 100 bucks to a couple thousand. i think we paid around 8-900 for our couch but it wasnt leather.

$1,400 sounds good to me.

My furniture store was the same as my tailor for the longest time... Goodwill.

Shirts for $1.50 and sofas for $60.

But my wife was short and modern sofas were too high for her. Her feet never touched the floor. So she looked around and found the ultimate a couple years back. It's a brand from Scandinavia with a multitude of available sizes including one that made her happy but... if I remember correctly, the couch was like $2,500. Leather yes and recliners on each end but fooking expensive. I've bought plenty of cars for a whole lot less than that

I'll be happy to go and check the brand if you want.

Just keep in mind, a sofa should be the most comfortable piece of furniture in your house. If you are like me, that's the only piece of furniture I ever sit on

You'll get what you pay for. If your going to pay a lot of money for furniture, ask questions. Where was it made., what is the warranty, does it have fabric protection, etc. etc.?? Most furniture sold here in the USA is made in Asia. Manufacturers contract with these companies in Asia to build furniture to their specs as cheaply as can be made. When quality goes down and wages for workers go up they move on to another country. Last I heard from a buddy in the high end furniture business, their's was being made in Viet Nam, but his manufacturers
were looking to move production to another Asian company that could provide cheaper labor. Research on the web.

Thanks bogeyguy for reminding me of one more reason we picked the brand we did.

We own birds. And with birds, YOU JUST CANNOT HAVE FABRIC PROTECTION. It kills parrots. Just like non-stick pans and such.

Thanks folks, I feel a lot better now. I know the gallery that has this sofa and they are sellers of high end furniture and have been in the same spot for donkeys years. I guess it was a case of sticker shock for not having to price furniture for so long. I did inquire about the construction, but not the country of origin. Leather is fairly easy to care for and feels so good to me, plus it is the longest lasting fabric. Oh yeah, another reason for not getting a used cloth sofa......... bodily fluids from previous owners. uke:

Cloudwalker, as mentioned, this will likely be the only piece of upholstered sitting furniture in the room. It's long enough for the two of us to lie down on to... uhhh, watch TV.

I'm at the point in my life that I want quality things about me and am in a position to have some of them. But in the same breath, frugality is in my DNA. They have this wrought iron bed set that is in their clearance room with a tag that says "make me an offer". What do you think, $100 bucks?

What really got to me recently, was the price of dining room chairs. You can't get a good quality chair for less than $200. And all the ones that cost $179 (IKEA etc.) were crap.
That really adds up when you need 6-8 chairs, plus a table.

We found a 'floor model' dining set. Small table & 4 good chairs for $345 (60% off). Too small and not enough chairs, but what a great deal. We took it...and then had them order another exact set. Couldn't get the sale price, but got it for $100 over the sale price of the first set. So we ended up with two tables and 8 good solid chairs for a decent price.
