Aperture & Lighting Setup

Hello people,

I'm a fan of portraiture and event photography, i did a lot of googling and watching a lot of tutorials on youtube to enhance my photography.
I want your enlightenment on this queries if you may.

1. In fashion photography, what aperture you will use if the subject is constantly moving. for example, in portrait wherein you can used an aperture of 2.8 and below,the subject should at least hold on so once you focus on the eye it will be sharp. but what if the head of the subject or the subject itself is moving and still you want a sharp subject and a blur background.
2. In-connection with lighting, can i use a speedlight to a moving subject because most of the time when i'm watching a video of fashion photography, they are using continuous light in combination with strobes.

Lighting, motion and backgrounds can get complicated when you're trying to make them work together. Depth of field is a function of aperture and distance to subject. If the camera is close to the subject and the background is distant, even f/8 will blur the background. If the camera is distant, f/8 will make the background appear sharper. You have to play with distances and apertures to find what works for you.

Aperture is subjective. With motion, you probably want f/11 to make sure you hold focus. With 2.8 or lower, it's easy for the subject to be out of focus. How you blend continuous with strobe is up to you. You have to understand that continuous and flash exposures are two different things and you have to understand how they work together.

Thanks hirejn, I really need to practice more and to experiments, I'm a bit nervous on the workshop that i'll be attending too. I'm not sure what setting I will use once the photo shoot started. I dont want to go home with blurry pictures.

There's about a million good books available on the subect and video tutorials too. Invest some time into the knowledge that's out there. This site is great, but if you really want to learn you need to invest in information.

Shooting moving fashion models is no different than shooting sports. You set your focus to continious mode. You can use any about any aperture you want that will have your subject in focus.
