Another shot of my daughter. I was shooting with a 50mm 1.4 on a crop sensor so the issue i know right off hand is that her hand is a little cropped out ...C&C welcome!

It's REALLLLLY close up, and with that f/stop and that close of shooting your daughter's face is not completely in focus: her nose, mouth and left eye are all out of focus. I understand if the lighting demands f/1.4, but it's working against you here

Don't be afraid to step back, capture more, and selectively crop down if you need to.

thank you! for the advice.. a few notes I didn't mention were it was actually at a f/8 shot at 1/30 of a sec I know pretty slow for hand held at the focal length... I do believe the out of focus may have been from her moving so fast... and I actually filled the frame pretty much a very slight crop by her hair was all that was done


I actually love shooting with a 50mm prime lens because it does force me to move about and look for different angles

You need to use DOFmaster.com to understand issues better here.
F8 gives you almost a foot in depth of field but you are sacrificing shutter speed.
F 5.6 gives you 6 inches - which is plenty and it raises your shutter speed and you could raise the iso to 400 or more to give you even more speed.
It is underexposed by at least half a stop and unsaturated in the red.
The light is coming from directly over her head - this there are highlights on the tops of her cheeks and her forehead, while her eyes are dark.
A face lying directly flat like this is an uncomfortable angle for viewers.

oh nice! I didn't know the exact measurements for each f/stop I will def check out this site!

and you sir are very observant as far as the underexposure I believe you are correct, however the saturation I took down myself in post I was trying to mute the colors a little guess I didn't do a good job haha but the lighting was actually all 90 degree natural side lighting from the sliding door window it was pretty direct I also darkened some areas in her eyes as well also not a good idea as well haha

as far as the posing... it's not my strong feat still trying to practice that area.

Side-lighting usually refers to the face when it is in a vertical plane so that the light comes across the face.
Since she is horizontal, the light seems to be coming from a spot perpendicular to the top of her head, thus looking like a face with overhead lighting.

Ohh I see, I understand what you are saying.

I was under the impression that the angle of the light hitting the subject would remain the same regardless of the subject (90 degree coming from the side, 45 degree over my shoulder etc.)

I'm still really new to this so I do appreciate all the advice and tips. I will be posting more photos hopefully you can give me more feedback on those as well!
