Astro tripod for photography

Astronomy makes heavy demands of a tripod and head. Here is a geared head with slow motion controls allowing vertical and horizontal camera orientation. It will support well over 50 lbs of equipement so it holds a camera and lens absolutely solid. This example is the "Duo T" from Canadian Telescopes and is priced much less than a heavy duty photography geared head. It may not be for everyone, but if you are looking for a rock solid tripod and head for your studio or for landscapes or for heavy cameras then the other expensive optical hobby, astronomy, might have some alternatives. In this photo the mount sits on a heavy duty wooden surveyor's tripod. These can be had relatively cheaply second hand and they are easy to fix and maintain.
