I have read where auto stabilizer functions in dslrs can sometimes introduce camera shake when none exist, like when using a tripod and remote/timer.
what is the general advice on this? i have had some photos that appeared to be completely sharp just before snapping at fast shutter speeds only to appear fuzzy afterward. i am wondering if auto stabilizer is responsible.

A Canon user here. Generally, if you are to mount your rig on a tripod, you have to turn off the Image Stabiliser. However, there are new generation lenses that can be mounted on tripods without turning off the IS.

Though i have a new generation lens, i still turn off the IS when I mount the camera on a tripod. You save on your camera's battery power too

Yes..when you are shooting on a tripod (camera is still), then stabilization can introduce blur. So turn it off in that situation.

I really don't think that stabilization will give you any blur at fast shutter speeds. If you are getting blur at fast shutter speeds, it's probably a focus issue....or maybe your shutter speed just isn't fast enough for your subject.

Most of the time image stabilization should be turned off. Use it when it will be beneficial. At shutter speeds above 1/125 or so, it's essentially useless.

Here is an article about Nikon's stabilzation system, but they all work about the same: Nikon VR explained
