My first black and white, what do you think?

Looks good. I like stronger sky, but that's me. I would suggest next time include the rock on which the lighthouse is standing. That will add magnificence to it. Now, it is me (again) ? Or this tower is leaning to the right ?

Yes, it is leaning. It's not on a rock, it's on a pier with a bunch of foliage and stuff. What do you mean by stronger sky though?

Rock was a metaphor, I meant the base of the lighthouse. The whole building with the pier and horizon, that would add depth and power to the lighthouse. Your picture is nice and clean, good representation but very polite, little dynamics or expression of the powerful function and pride. What I would do, providing the lower part is not so good for picture, is take ultrawide lens and go as close to the tower as possible and as low as possible. Threshold here is the view of the flag, it has to be good, flag is a center point of the "story". Then I would take the picture while pointing the lens upward. Something like that:

Strong sky: in a sunny day blue sky is darker then white, but in your rendition is the opposite. Now imagine the sky (not clouds) almost black, what it will do for the lighthouse, what it will do for the clouds, how much drama and third dimension it will add to the picture.
He he, I just looked at your links. I can see, that you already have experience in low, wide angle takes.

Honestly, it's just an okay photo of a lighthouse. I think Timor gave some great suggestions

yes.. for a shot like this, you really do need to get the base in the photo also! Lighthouses don't float in the air.. and it just looks odd. This is true of most buildings.

Precisely. I'm a little confused about what you mean about the sky though. What do you mean by black? Like an empty black background? Or make the clouds black or what?

yes.. for a shot like this, you really do need to get the base in the photo also! Lighthouses don't float in the air.. and it just looks odd. This is true of most buildings.

Yeah, but at timor has said below, it's not exactly "clean" below so I wanted the emphasis to be on the flag. I liked timor's suggestion about close and wide - I need to get a wide angle lens!

Oh, I thought that link was about the first part. How do you make the clouds black like that? Post production?

Clouds are white, as black appears blue part of the sky. How ? No post production, I've got it right in the camera. Shots are made on Tmax film with the use of red filter. Off course proper development is also needed. I can't help you here I am afraid, but I've seen many digitally made b&w pictures with sky rendered in the same way, so it is possible. When I see something, I will let you know. Here is one, but I am not sure if Tuffy used for it digital. The second pic :

Hmm, that's interesting. I've seen some pp options though that can achieve the same effect.

So clean it up in post. That railing probably was not always there.... Not perfect... at work, so can't spend much time on it. Pretty easy to do though...

Ha, is that my picture? It looks a lot like the same lighthouse, except horizontally reverse. But still, I can tell it is photoshopped, and I don't like that.

So clean it up in post. That railing probably was not always there.... Not perfect... at work, so can't spend much time on it. Pretty easy to do though...
