Get a flash you can bounce off the ceiling.

...but I did bounce off the ceiling. diffuser dome reflected a bit back into the eyes.

Ahh! That explains it. It seemed harsh but not MEGA harsh and I wasn't sure why. You were up close weren't you?

I've gotten bitten by this before. I've found if you are closer you need to take that dome off. The highlights in the eyes won't be as good but the light overall will be better. In theory you could do a bounce card (small one) but you then run the risk of the light coming right from above giving you raccoon eyes and such.

If you weren't close... Well... Then I just wasted your time and embarrassed myself.
