Backpack Space

Do you buy backpacks that only carry photography gear? Or do you also get some that have space for other things like jackets, water, etc. like the Lowepro CompuDaypak?

If you're going out to a National Park, you certainly don't want to lug around a huge backpack full of glass when you're hiking uphills. Would you just bring multiple backpacks and bring the lens you need?

Why is that? They're the easiest way to carry your gear along the trail.

If that were the case, how would lugging around multiple backpacks improve the situation?

I would use one backpack and try to fit as much as I could in it. Photography gear as well as all the other stuff you would normally need.

Sorry. The easiest way to carry is a vest and a waist pack or two. Backpacks are fantastic in airports.

^ please one tragic event will not change the way people view backpacks. I have the lowepro hatchback 22. This past weekend I went to Hershey park. I fit my camera 2 lenses. Ipad,snacks for my kids 2 drinks and 2 kids sweaters. Plus a couple little nacks. Love this backpack.

I use this one by Caselogic. It comfortably holds my 7D a Canon 24-70mm, Canon 70-200mm, 50mm, Tokina 11-16mm, a 2x extender and a bunch of accessories. It also has a very handy feature where you can pull the body/lens out of the top of the bag without having to open the entire pack. It also has a hard bottom so you can stand it up.

I'm looking for a good-size pack to take on day hikes, so that means it needs to have room for extras such as food, light jacket, water, etc. and still enable me to grab the camera rather quickly when I need it without having to dismantle the entire setup. I've looked at the Clik Elite Obscura, which seems to have everything I need, including a nice waist belt for support, but they're out of stock until November, according to them. Any other suggestions? I like a lot of the Clik Elite bags but each one seems to have one or two things missing that I want.

I bought a Kata 3n1-30 but never use it. I found that it didn't have enough room for other stuff. Now I use a Camelbak Tri-Zip backpack and carry the same camera gear as my Kata but still have room for the other things that I like to carry with me. My Camelbak is pretty much my bag that I take everywhere. Depending on where I'm going I might add or remove some camera gear but I always have the other stuff I want. The Tri-Zip isn't perfect, but it works the best of any of the packs that I have.

I buy packs with the intention of having extra space, then just fill it with camera gear anyways.

If Im going on a short hike (1-3 miles) I will just bring that pack and a water bottle.

If I am doing serious back packing in the Sierras I will use my mountaineering pack and just sneak whatever camera gear in around everything else I need.

I do like that one and the Photo Sport AW 200; now if I can just find one for a good price that won't make the wife freak out. I've checked out the F-Stop bags too and like the Loka; how's the ease of access to camera gear with that one?

I'm thinking about going that route also, but that would probably mean not having easy camera access.
