Even at 500mm it requires fairly aggressive crops on small birds 10 meters or so.

Very nice. That Towhee looks mad! And you are right about the cropping of small birds. "Critter shooting" certainly involves compromises -- trying to keep the ISO down with relatively slow lenses, cropping to get a decent size -- but not too much -- or lose IQ, etc., etc! And of course, the subjects themselves are lousy models, especially birds -- always on the wrong side of the sun, hiding in branches, flying away one microsecond before the shutter is snapped. Grrrrrr...:sexywink:

I see this post disappeared to page 2 with no replies. My "Sandhill Crane" post did too after only two replies and zero likes. Not sure it's worth the time posting on this forum if there is so little interest in what one does.

Cheers, Lee

Nice shots, Brian. It does require a lot of cropping most of the time. No matter the lens small birds are still small birds ;)

Don't sweat it. I quit worrying about it long ago. If people respond to what I post that's great and I appreciate it. If not I don't let it bother me. TPF is a general photography forum and not a nature photography forum. The photos that are going to get tons of views aren't the nature shots.

Love the Towhee! Nice to see some sunshine, isn't it? Spring is about to really burst forth here, and I'm loving it.

The other thing to keep in mind is that thread response often depends on SO many variables that it's nearly impossible to predict. What time of day you post, which day of the week it is, how many other new threads there are, whether there is currently a thread in the process of exploding into internet fisticuffs, how many nature photographers might be online to see your thread quickly before it falls off the "new" list, it all plays a huge part in how many responses you get, as does your post itself.

Just post your photos, and give it time. If nobody responds (or there is very little response) by the next day, give it a little bump to move it back to active threads. After that, I generally just move on and let the thread die with as much dignity as it can muster. :D

I think it might also help to post often , or at least regularly. I don't and I think people are more likely to respond once they are familiar with you.

That's true. Then they come to know what to expect from looking at your work. Love the slotted towhee..seen enough finchs lol but i saw another thread on migrating cranes? Was that you? I know those were nice too...I've come to gain an appreciation for the equipment you need to get good nature shots. Keep up the good work. I tried taking bird shots with 135mm...........ya, tried.

Looking forward to more birds coming back here too, i love me so towhee's !!! They are a real interesting bird

Nice shots. I agree even a 500mm usually need cropping. There has been a few times I had to back off from 500mm but not to often.
