For me I would have cropped the 2nd pic to have more space in front of the bird rather than behind.

Man, I tried shooting birds for quite some time and never got anything this good. I like Eric's suggestion for the cropping. Are these significant crops? I ask because the noise is getting pretty high. I thought maybe some NR and selective sharpening might help:

Yes, these are huge crops, as I'm using an 18-105mm lens :D
I'm using sharpening and NR in Lightroom, but I find I lose more detail with the NR on this picture, because it really isn't as sharp as it could be, either I shook or the bird moved slightly on this shot.
