Band promo shoot

Took them last night. I like the lighting in the first one the best, the second is more for show flyers and such, which is why I left negative space at the top.

Lighting
1. Bare directly behind at 1/2. Soft box directly in front and high at 7/8.
2. Bare at 3/4 at left. Soft box at 3/4 high to right.

I as well like #1. I like how the shadows cast straight lines. Back lighting is nice. As they are posed in a very symmetrical pattern, its great that their arms are all straight to their sides, adding to the symmetry

As for #2, I'm not a fan of the background. I also think there is too much sky and their heads are smack on the middle of the line. Expressions in #2 aren't as good as expressions in #1, mainly the front guy. I also don't like the arm holding of the guy on the left (right of the front guy). Shadows on the floor are all over the place, somewhat distracting

I didn't notice how crazy the shadows were in the second picture either, so thank you for pointing that out. The reson there is so much sky is so they can put things at the top for show flyers or whatever. Thanks for your input!

I'm not sure how much more detail I can go into, but I'll give it a shot.

1. The light behind was bare at 1/2 power. It was about 2½ ft. high on a stand. In the front my assistant was holding the stand full extended about 2 ft. off the ground and at an angle above them. The light was in a soft box at 7/8 power.

2. The light to the left was bare and at 3/4 power. It was at the same height as the previous shot and about 10 ft. away from them. Soft box at 3/4 power high and to right. It was at the full height of the stand, which is about 15 ft.

I don't know much about studio lighting.. most photos I take are landscape or plants and whatnot..

I'm not quite sure if you're being a dick or what but I am oh so very sorry I misunderstood your question, sir (Edit: or ma'am). They are Interfit 150ex studio strobes.

The bands name is Storm The Armada. I'm good friends with everyone in it and figured that was my best bet for my first time doing a promo shoot. Honestly, I learned how to use the lights on my own. I didn't use any books or anything...sorry. Of course, you could check out Strobist, I'm sure you will find something there.
