Bar Band with the D800 C+C

Second day out with the trusty D800 and I figured I would put it to the test. A friend of mine works
at a bar that has local bands play just about every night, and he asked me if I wanted to come down and
test out my new camera. Of course I obliged - and here are the results:

A lot of firsts in the last couple of weeks, and I've been spending a lot of time outside my comfort zone. I've never done this kind of photography before.
This was definitely challenging. Between the exposures constantly changing, the colors changing, and the lowest light I've ever shot with, I can say that
this kind of photography is tough, but I will say that it was fun. I'm actually planning to go back tomorrow night and try again.

The D800's low light performance is good, but the noise @ 6400 is plentiful. If anyone has any tips on noise reduction, I'd love to hear them. I'm just using
the luminance slider.

In cs5 and I'm sure in cs6 you can select the color channels individually , highlights, shadows,or use the color sampler under selections and click the color area with noise and apply noise reduction selectively.

Nice set! Im not sure what program you are using for editing, but between LR 4 and cs6 I have found that LR 4's noise reduction does a much better job than photoshops'. And in terms of editing in number 4, you seem to have pushed the saturation slightly too much, because your red channel is clipping, especially on the drummers face, hair and symbol.

Almost all of these are shot too tight... Again. Chopped limbs, tension, etc.

They're not bad shots, they just have some very simple compositional flaws IMO.

Shoot wider, crop in post. You have a 36mp sensor. You should use it.

I like the B&W the best..... I would leave a little more space around the subjects next time so as to not crop off body parts... club shooting can be hard because it is tight.

It wasn't that I shot too tight, it's just that some of the better shots were poorly framed. Some of these are really cropped in, just that they ride the bottom of the frame. Some shots were also get it with the flaws or miss it in that environment.
#5 is probably my favorite, even if it has minor flaws. The bass player rode the mic all night, and he stepped back for a second and I took the shot.

Edit: #6 I was shooting over people's heads, and I'm really short. So i avoided the heads, but couldn't get more of him in frame.

I'll try to get better spots tonight.

I didn't touch the vibrancy or saturation in any of these. #4 is SOOC.

Edit: I'm using photoshop. I'm going to have to look into lightroom because photoshop makes the image so soft. Thanks
