Hello everyone,
I shot a lot of pictures and I always find my self to run out of batteries. What can you guys/girls tell me about the battery grip??? I own a Canon 50D and there is quiet few of them on eBay for around $50.00. Is this something that I should look into????? Any advice would be appriciated. Thanks.

Never used a 3rd party battery grip but generally speaking when youhave a grip you now have two batteries in the camera. This makes it last for ages, but make sure that you have one or two extra spare batteries so that when it does die you have something to fall back on.

The canon grips and I assume some of the 3rd party also come with a slot that lets you use 6AA batteries to power the camera as well. Honestly though you don't get many shots with a DSLR and AA batteries and I've never used mine

You must be taking a lot of photos like crazy (or use a lot of build-in camera flash) since a fully charged battery in my 40D usually last pretty long. And I often carry 1 or 2 extra batteries in the camera bag.

I have a Canon battery grip and I use it sometimes. (I do not use it when I want to travel light and do not want to carry a lot of stuff)

As for the off branded battery grip. I used to own a Canon XTi with Targus grip and that grip is not bad. Feels good, the only draw back is the button feel. It is different from my Canon 40D grip. Other than that, I have no issue with it.

I use an off brand battery grip and it works fine. Besides giving you more battery capacity, the grip makes your camera bigger, and likely easier to hold. It also gives you additional buttons, so that you don't have to hold your arm/elbow up when taking photos in portrait orientation.

I got into boxing photography, I shoot a lot of pics that way. In the 8 round fight I can average anywhere from 500 to 800 pictures, and of course after all set and done only 50 are good. Thanks for the advice.

The 50D should still last much more than 500-800 shots...Pretty sure it's rated for like 1,100 or something per charge (assuming no on-camera flash, which you shouldn't be using most likely anyway since it won't even be *reaching* the boxers unless you're right by the ropes). Sounds like you either don't charge the battery or you need to replace it.

When I shoot 4 or 5 fights a night it does not make it. You are absolutely correct with the 1,100 shoots but I do a lot more than that.

One keeper out of every 65 or so shots, indicates a problem much worse than battery life.

What is wrong with the other 450 to 750 that makes them not good.

Camera shutters have finite lifetimes. The 50D is rated at 100,000 actuations. Your's may last longer, it could also not last that long.

I have a Ziekos grip for my D90 and I love it! I mainly got it because its so much more comfy shooting vertical since it has shutter release and front and rear controls. I payed $60 brand new off amazon

I hate not having a grip. You will love the feel it gives your camera, and will find the ability to shoot portrait more comfortably very nice. Added battery power is a plus, and the AA cartridge can help in a bind. Most people carry some AA batts anyway for their flashes. I believe that the cartridge of AA batts will get roughly half the shots that a single charged battery pack will. I have never used the cheap ones. I have the canon ones and love them. Perhaps the cheap ones are great, I am not sure, but I know the name brands are.

I have a cheap one and it works fine but there are two issues with them mainly..

The battery life meter doesn't usually work in the camera, and you'll go from what you think is a full charged couple of batteries, to dead.. instantly.

The batteries are said to not have the same robust capacity of the Canon brand lithium ion packs. This is probably true..

My opinion though, a cheap battery grip (mine cost me $50) is still better than no grip.

Yeah, the cheap batteries themselves can be no good. Some won't even register with the camera in order to show power levels that are left. I do like the newer Canon grips better than the old ones. The ole ones you slid batteries out of the end in a row. Now they load in the side, which is just easier. You also hold the grip over the opening so you can't accidentally let the compartment come open and drop out on you.

I use a Digipower rechargeable one on my Rebel XT, and I find it extremely reliable and the charge last a LONG time. I only have to charge it once every 2-3 months and that's with about 4,000 shots or more during that time.

If you only need fresh batts every 2-3 months, you aren't shooting enough.
