Battery problem

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7.Last time I charged the battery I left it on overnight.It is now dead as a door nail.I read somewhere that this charger will drain the battery if left on too long.Now it will not charge.Does anyone know how to fix this?I know,read the manual!It doesn't say anything about this that I can find.Either on-line or in the manual.Help!

What type of battery is it? Nickel-Cadmium? Lithium-Ion?
