Hi.. I usually just shoot with natural light but would like to try and add some new lighting techniques. Can anyone suggest an easy set up for shooting at the beach late in the day/early evening? What would I need for lighting and how would I set it up without power? Thankyou for all your suggestions in advance!

With no power you can only use reflectors.

Many use off camera hot shoe flash units (strobed light), which have battery power and/or ports where battery packs with as many as 8 AA batteries can be plugged in. Off camera hot shoe flash units are often fired using radio frequency triggers.

Since you usually just shoot with ambient light, are you aware of how to use lens aperture to control the strobed light exposure, and shutter speed to control the ambient light exposure with a single shutter release?

For off camera flash (OCF) lighting info, visit Strobist: Lighting 101 and study the Lighting 101 section.
