Were you going for the one side of her face to be more exposed than the other?

To me it would look better all the same. Just my opinion maybe.

I assume that you are posing her straight on to take advantage of the lovely symmetry of her face and that works.

The sharpness is fine but I think there are some technical and posing deficiencies that hurt.
First the deepness of the shadow on her left side makes a shot that seems too dramatic and at odds with the image of a little girl.
Next, her face is the real center of interest of this shot and should be supported by an almost symmetrical position of her arms. Her right arm is terrific but the left disappears and thus throws the composition off, I think.
There is a lot of space at top r and l and her face is rather small and high in the frame, and the dress takes up too much space and doesn't add all that much so cropping it back (and adding a bit at the top helps a bit.
Lastly the tone is rather cold for this shot, I think, and I converted to rgb and added a slight sepia tone to soften the entire effect.

She is beautiful and I'm certain that many great photos will follow.

I looked at this again and thought about the dark shadow on her cheek.
That might be extra ruddiness that could be reduced before the conversion; that would give a more gentle tone to her cheek.

I don't see any problem with the shadow on her cheek...the eye has a catchlight, and the shadow delineates the shape of her face. Take away the shadow and it becomes just another boring, flat-lighted shot.

Nothing wrong with the lighting choice IMHO. I see you used 32mm focal length. Something longer (space permitting) would have helped with her lead arm/hand.

I love dark moody b/ws. but these shadows/highlights are too harsh imo, especially for a little girl. I do think it is an adorable photo though, and I prefer the travelers edit b/c it makes the photo look softer.

My one point for C&C is they keying...the choice of background vs clothing.
Here you have a dark dress against a bright background (so it's not keyed). The result is that the dress contrasts with the background a lot more than she does, and that draws the viewer's eye. If you are advertising the dress, that is the desired effect you would want. But if the girl is the subject, then you would want her to draw more attention than the dress....which can be accomplished by matching the clothing more closely to the background.

I like the crop over the op as well as the lightening of the dark side. But the oddities in the top right remain.
