Been asked to do a lecture, OMG! Any advice is appreciated :)

The three things to make better pictures:

Simplify.
Connect.
Engage.

On the technical side:

Light
Shadow
Transition between the two.

This works whether you're using a DSLR or a cell phone.

Tomatoes, Ta-matoes. Lol.

With respect, I'd trim it down given your audience and the time available. Any chance you can split this into two shorter sessions?

Try sticking to three topics: composition, background, and exposure. These are technology/cost-independent considerations. Too little said about too many topics can be deadly. Try saying more about fewer topics. Give them a listing of links for online tutorials.

I know it sounds like a lot, but I'm working all.of these things in together as we go further along on the image slide to show them.examples, unfortunately I do not think I could get 2 sessions out of it, not unless they asked me first. The art teacher is now interested in having me come to her classroom later in the year based on how this one goes with the AV kids, her students are more advanced so hopefully I'll be asked back and get into more fun stuff with her kids.
