Beginner Recommendations

Hey, I am looking to get into photography more and need advice on what i can get with my interests and budget. I am i high school student so the most important aspect is the $. I know it is hard to say oh this or this camera is best so what i am looking for is around 500 - 600$ for a SRL. I have used film SLR in photography class at school so i know the basics of using one. Things i would like to be able to do with it are shoot night photography, long exposures, some sports, landscapes and other things but those are the most important to me. At the present time, the biggest bang for the buck is the Nikon D40 provided that you're aware of a limitation. Some older Nikon lenses will not focus automatically with the D40 although you will get confirmation when you focus manually. The ones that DO focus automatically are called AF-S. All other functions work just ducky.

thanks i was actually looking at that camera because the film camera I was using was a nikon. What would be a good way to go about getting the camera along with lenses preferably an all around lens and a zoom lens.

I don't understand your question. A "good way" is to buy it! (I'm sure that you meant something different.) Incidentally, I've been dealing with B&H since before the Internet existed and I've found them to be extremely ethical.

Be forewarned that ALL amateur digital SLRs have one characteristic that might catch you a bit by surprise if your experience is film SLRs. The lenses act a bit different. The Field of View will be equivalent to a lens with a focal length 50% longer than what you've experienced with film. For example, a 50mm normal lens will act like a 75mm portrait lens! A moderate 200mm telephoto will appear like a 300mm unit. Read this:

Sorry what I meant by good was was what is the best way to get lenses wether is be buying it with the camera in a kit or separate sorry for the confusion. And thank you for the link.
