best books for learning the basics?

Any suggestions would be great! Stuff on ISO, exposure, shutter speed, and aperture. TIA

Hands down: Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. (Make sure you get the 3rd edition!)

This doesn't qualify for learning the exposure triangle like Understanding Exposure, but I would recommend The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman

The Scott Kelby Photography 1-4 set is pretty darned great. The internet is pretty amazingly filled with information!

Scot Kelby's first book of that series (the only one I've read) is a great book for the very bare bones beginner who has no DSLR experience what so ever! It's a very good starting point - Understanding Exposure would build on from that well and Freeman's book is a great way to broaden your horizons into learning about art and not just exposure. Both areas being important to learn about, but I would say focus on the exposure first and foremost. Don't ignore the art by any means, but learn to control the tool well before you really focus on learning to be artistic with the tool

As already mentioned the set Digital Photography by Scott Kelby (4 books total) and Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson will teach you enough when you can then concentrate on certain areas.

Agree on the Scott Kelby books. I haven't read the fourth yet, but the first 3 were really good. Understanding Exposure was really good too.

Just finished reading through this entire book and it was fantastic. With all the reading and studying done online, this book was a great reference and helped my confidence in understanding Exposure.
