Wow this thread got some attention. I have to admit that Best Buy is very $$$. Also I asked the sales guy about fx and dx and he didnt know what I was talking about. I told him it doesn't really matter. The sales guys say the dumbest things.
Overall the build quality was very cheap as well as the images. Im a big natural light guy because I like sports photography. Only hockey and basketball(which I have never shot) would I use lighting. I just didnt like the J1 and Im a Nikon guy.

I'm a musician among other things, and the salesmen are just the same in a guitar shop lol, they know NOTHING about the product..they just know how to sell things to naive people that know **** and scam them into buying things...its really mindbogglingly totally ridicules...once upon a time a salesman would actually know what there selling...today its all about making the sale by all costs.

yeah, but how many people with that level of knowledge/experience are willing to work at a big box store for minimum wage?

I see this argument all the time. I understand, but I don't go to Best Buy or Home Depot and expect the sales guy to be an IT professional/electrical engineer who knows every detail about every item in the store. At most all I want to know is where something is located (and then only if I'm not interested in walking the aisles to find it myself).

As for going to Best Buy to get "hands-on", um...I can't recall ever seeing anything on display there that actually powered on, much less "worked". Just like wal-mart.

I agree partly, though Camera's aren't exactly rocket science you know, they COULD actually know the basics for F's sake .

I'm lucky enough to have a couple really good camera shops not too far away. Unfortunately the places that cater to pros are closing left and right, and even the 'pro' shops in my area seem to be selling more and more compacts and consumer stuff. I have bought a few hard drives and maybe a couple memory cards at BB, but it is definitely not the place I go for any sort of intelligent advice.

No it's not rocket science, however have a look at the posts that show up on this forum asking about the most basic of functions. And these are from folks who have some interest in photography as well as the skills needed to seek out a pertinent forum and ask a pertinent question. If these folks can't figure out what crop factor means, or if an fx lens will work on a dx camera, then we really should not expect some kid at the box store who has no interest in cameras to know these answers either.

Yeah, which means training is "work" time and they have to get paid for it...which means it won't be allowed because that cuts into volume sales profits...

Big box stores are good at one thing, lots of merchandise choices all in one place.

Exactly...now your talking...its all about the money..profit gain...cuts on working value...no one cares about human value or information...just mamon and the golden cow .

I think if you really were the boss your priorities would magically change very quickly. If you were to send just one person to tech school, first select the name brand for that training, then travel expenses, lodging, and wages while training, then 6 weeks after he gets back, he quits to go to work for your competitor. Start over with sales person #2, repeat.
