Best lens for weddings

Let's wait until we know a little more about the circumstances before we castigate the OP shall we? For all we know at this point, he's going to be fourth shooter at his cousin's wedding.

Conclusions are easy to jump to. Not so easy to gracefully back out of when necessary.

I recommend the following (or equivalent!) for a start:

I highly recommend having at least two of the following (or equivalent!): Amazon.com: Nikon SB-910 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: Electronics And knowing how to use them well is a must!

Some wireless triggers (at least 3) Amazon.com: Pocket Wizard FlexTT5 Transceiver For Nikon TTL Flashes and Digital SLR Cameras: Electronics , and some stands, modifiers, reflectors!

This would be a good start on just the equipment..... only about $14k or so...... that or similar would be what REAL PRO's use..... (not including YEARS of knowledge and practice)!!

NO KIT LENSES allowed either!

I'm not a pro, but I'll take that 85mm 1.4 if you dont want it cgipson.

NO NO NO NO!!! lol! I love my 85mm!!! Just don't get to use it as often as I would like! I have a severe lack of lovely, nude women knocking on my door... begging me to shoot them! (da name is Charlie, btw!)

Ok I was asking the question because I'm starting to upgrade from my kit lens 18-55, 55-200, 55-300, 50 1.8, 35 1.8 I was offered to second shoot a wedding and other events form a friend to help me get started (Every one has to start somewhere) I have the Nikon 3100 should have got the d7000 when I was buying camera. Saving up for d800 I would love the d4. So first thing I wanted to do was upgrade the glass then the body already on my list was the 70-200 2.8, talking to the gentleman at the camera store are telling me that I need something like 17-70, And 70-200 both 2.8

Ppl ask question cause they dont know or want more options on something (stop saying I you have too ask then your not ready) we all had to learn and start from somewhere me I'm hoping in a few years to be as good as pros that have been doing this for sometime with all the right equipment

Most of the real PRO's learned to shoot... BEFORE they started charging people! Which is my main complaint with most of the new breed of PRO's.. that seem to think it is ok to charge people while trying to learn! I have a serious problem with that!! It is unethical... and really hurts the profession as a whole! That and the fact that most of them turn out CRAP!

To be quite honest, I'm having a hard time reading this. Some punctuation would help a little( with all due respect.) Why do you have a 55-200 and 55-300? The primes you have are pretty good. If you don't want them, I'll take them . On a much more serious note, if you don't know what you need out of a lens, you aren't ready yet. Reason being, kit lenses are good for their intended purpose or within their limitations. When you hit the limitations and you know what they actually are, then you will know the specs on the lens you seek. I know it doesn't seem like much help but you have to learn your gear, learn what you want, and how to achieve it. Also, many people have different tastes. Some like primes some like constant aperture zooms. If you are serious about weddings, I'd try to be an assistant or second shooter to a seasoned pro. Study, practice/ apply, and repeat.

I'm in no way shape or form attempting any weddings soon but I would personally have a 24-70 ( or at least a 17-50 for your body ) 2.8, a 70-200 2.8, and a few speedlights with extra batteries.

Now the pro I work with has offered to let me second shoot with her she also told me too do a few weddings for free that's how she got started yes I would love to go out and make money but I know I need and want more out of my work thank you very much

Shoot with her for a while until you think you are ready.
