I think the lighting is what is killing this for me. It's just not pleasing to view.

Can you elaborate? Is it too little or too much? Or just the way the light is hitting the flower? I appreciate feedback but I can't learn unless I get good solid constructive criticism.

Too harsh. Try a diffuser.

See the hard edges between shadow and light? That isn't flattering. Also the bottom petal has super mixed lighting. Read what sparky said.

Yes, lighting seems too harsh. Of the two, I prefer the color over the B&W.

I like the color shot better. Advice? ON flowers, even relatively small blemishes, like the one this flower has at the bottom, can appear much worse in photos than in real life, so either frame to eliminate defects, or pick another blossom that is better, or in some cases, "groom" the blossom by paring, or pulling off petals, or re-arranging to hide defects, or re-composing to eliminate them from view. Keep at it!

Awesome! This is all amazing feedback. My next question would be, would it be appropriate to use the flash in this situation? I know there are other flowers but lets be super hypothetically and say that this was my ONLY option for this type of picture.
