Shots from a regional bike race a two summers ago w my "old" setup: D70s and Sigma 70-300. With 1 & 3, was trying to capture the rider's expressions (eg pain!). Comments please. Thnx!

#3 is awesome using the bikers as leading lines....

#1 is a pretty good newspaper shot...

Thanks guys!

I thought about trying a slower speed shot with focus on the biker to allow the background to blur. The bikes are generally going 30+mph on the straight. What sort of camera speed do you think it would take to get such an effect? (These were at 1/1600ish)

Thanks in advance!

Are you talking about panning? If yes take a look at this, it explains it pretty well. Very nice shots by the way!!!

Thanks!

Yes, panning is probably what I'm talking about (I don't use the term since it makes me think of live video panning). Thanks for the link. (fyi...page wasn't accessible from adorama. I'll try again later.)

#2 looks great. The focus on the leaders and composition showing the peloton makes this shot stand out.

Have you tried it from YouTube?

Thanks Marc! Great learning video! (yes, panning is what I had in mind.) The video made it look easy!...I can't wait for the snow to get off the ground so I can get out and try it!

JimO: Thanks for the comment...especially since the leader/peloton effect is the result of my crop. The original had another bike wheel on the left which was distracting to the leader/peloton effect.
