black and white look

For someone doing portraits and people photography, if one wishes to shoot in black and white. Would it be better to shoot in black and white effect on the DSLR, or shoot it in color and use Photoshop to edit it into black and white?

I shoot in RAW so black and whites are made in Photoshop

Shoot in color. Altering the colors effects the tones of the black and white image. Post Processing leaves room for you to tweak those colors first before converting.

I personally always shoot in color then convert to B&W or sepia in post processing.

I personally normal just shoot on camera as this cuts down any post processing. Having used film for so long, i still shoot the same way, just with a dslr

If you're shooting in JPEG, shoot in color. You have much more control when converting your photos to B&W in post. If you shoot RAW it doesn't really matter, as the files will contain color data anyway. However some photographers prefer to set the camera in B&W when shooting RAW. This way they get an idea of what the shot will be like instantly on LCD, but still have the colors when loading the images on a PC.

I think that it's better to shoot in color, that way you can change it to black and white if you want, or keep it in color if you caught a neat effect.
