BOOK THAT TEACHES APERATURE, ETC

Nikon Creative Lighting System by Mike Hogen is a good book for your SB-600.

So if my camera sets all these settings in AUTO why do I need to set them manually? It seems like in auto they would be set at the best settings for the lighting that I am in?? I am TOTALLY new to all this! I know these may be really stupid questions butttttt?????? lol

Manually adjusting the settings allows you to have some creative control. For instance, adjusting the aperture would give you control over how much of the scene in front and behind of your subject is in focus (which is called Depth Of Field), and adjusting the shutter speed would determine how motion is captured (long shutter speeds gives you motion blur, and short shutter speeds will freeze action).

Your camera's auto mode will, more often than not, give you a well-exposed photograph, but it has no way to account for these other creative elements.

Yes, the camera is just a machine and no match for your brain. I can't wait till the day when I'm smarter than my camera.

You are actually a lot smarter than the camera. But, your brain doesn't work as fast as the electronics in the camera does and the camera has already been trained, sort of, while you haven't.

The camera does not know what you are taking a picture of, and does not know what you want to accomplish artistically. But, it can do some things by rote that help an untrained human take some picture.

They say a new photographer has to conciously make 10,000 images before they understand the basic fundamentals of photography. Note that says "conciously make", not just mindlessly clicking the shutter.

You are going to have to work at learning to use the camera, lens, and flash. If you are not willing to put forth a positive attitude and the effort required, don't expect to get very good at photography.

Another vote for Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. It's what I used when I was first learning and found it immensely helpful.

well my way of putting it
Photography is not just showing how beautiful the subject is but also being able to show the world how differently you can look at it :), and only you can do it not the cam.
