Bought a new lense today

I JUST BOUGHT A 70-200 f2.8, im psyched and cant wait to start shooting it. I purchased it because i am shooting a semi pro hockey team this winter. Can anyone offer some tips with using this lenses? I figure keep it on vr and enjoy. If i pan then turn off the vr.

Congrats! and be sure to pick up a manfrotto monopod and the 234RC head for it.
Will come in handy and give your arms a rest from time to time.

My first advice would be not to shoot your new multi-thousand dollar lens.

My second advice would be to learn how to spell lens.

Haha, my third piece of advice would be to ask yourself what the hell you plan to pan while shooting a hockey game? The players skating around the goalie? I guess you could pan the players but then their legs would be 'panned' as would the other players. May look amazing, may look awful.. I fear trying it because you don't want to miss an important goal or something.. Try it in practice or warmups maybe.

Turn VR off because if your shooting sports you will be using shutter speeds above what VR will work and it slows down focus very slightly

What about the bonus of the more stabilised viewfinder image when using VR/IS. Granted its far more noticeable on longer lenses, but even at 200mm I find that (when handholding) it helps to have the viewfinder image more stable

FWIW, I just bought the new Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR11 also.

I just took a break from walking around the yard playing with it.

I don't have any advice either but I sure do like it.

Gonna take it to the pumpkin patch today with the grandkids.

panning on a breakaway would be sweet. even if not, its a great lens. i get 2.8 at 200mm whats wrong with that????

The meaning is correct and while "lens" is the more popular spelling, "lense" is not only perfectly correct, but in the UK, the preferred spelling. Lens is the correct and only spelling
Lense only occurs because people try to reverse spell the singular from the plural which is lenses. They take off the s and think that its lense for the singular when in fact you add both the e and the s because lens ends with an s.

Check the OXFORD dictionary not some fancy web thing that gets it wrong
