Well, we really don't know if he's a fish yet. And if so, he may not be a bass. He may be a trout, or a marlin, or a goldfish.

The problem here is that you're going after a fresh water fish. If things don't work out, the expression "plenty of other fish in the sea" won't apply. Sure there are other fish in the pond too, but a lot less of them. Next time try going after a grouper, cod or other ocean-dwelling fish; you'll have much better odds if your first fish doesn't bite.
