I can't help feeling that this just misses; I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think at least part of it is that he's so dark in areas, but not in others. The stripe below his elbow is clear, there's detail in his collar... it doesn't make visual sense.

Originally white stripes were too white and shiny. I darkened them during postprocessing.

For me there is no surrounding context. Where is he, are there other kids he's playing with, and in this day and age is it a real gun or toy? There's nothing for the viewer to latch onto.

It might be the tree on the left, because we only see part of it. If I cover it up with a piece of white paper, it's a different picture. Maybe if the tree was more in the foreground, the framing would work better.
