I was fortunate to be sent to CES by my company and promised lots of photos/videos. I went "low-tech". Instead of bringing the office Canon Rebel XTi, I brought both of my own Sony P&S cameras instead. One is the old old V1. I like this because I can play with the manual mode and I have a wide angle lens attachment, so it's VERY useful taking shots in crowded places. The second is L1, which is small, compact and convenient. I don't have big memory sticks, so I brought an iPad along to download the data when my cards run out of space.
The Canon is big compared to these little guys, and more nimble. The lens it has is F4~5.6 18~85mm, which don't do well in low light at all. I got pretty good at using my p&s in low light, so I was more comfortable with that.
So every night after the show, I'd off load all the media from my cameras to the iPad via the iPad camera connection kit, linking the 30pin connector to mini usb. It worked well... or so I thought. See, Sony saves the videos in MPG format which cannot be viewed on the iPad. For the L1, it also saves an extra file "THM", which I have no idea what they do. I usually just delete them when I have downloaded them to the PC. In any case, I couldn't preview the videos on the iPad since it's not quick time format. I also have to delete all files from my cards or else I won't have space left.
Anyways, I was downloading the pics and videos from the iPad onto my work laptop. All the photos downloaded fine. All of the videos from the V1 downloaded fine. However, all of the videos from the L1 got turned into that "THM" format, which is absolutely useless! I tried to manually change its extension to mpg, didn't work. In fact, the THM files are really small, which tells me that they are no good. So I lost video demos of the Galaxy, the Audi HUD dashboard animation and a bunch of good stuffs that I don't even remember.
So beyond ranting, what will be a good way to store media from digital cameras without having to bring my laptop?
