Burning magnesium and a cow skull nik nak

Serious question: Is this cgi or photography?

What is cgi? This is a photograph. I took a ceramic skull and put it on a blue cardboard with foil under the skull and placed a piece of burning magnesium (very bright) under the skull. Took several shots and this is the best one....

Very nice effect. I would crop the first one a little tighter. There's some unused space to it.

One question though: Since magnesium burns incredibly hot how did you keep from burning everything up...or down?

Magnesium but played with the photo a bit with contrast and brightness to get it right. Thanks

I basically only adjusted the lighting a bit to bring out the light and shadow. I was using an 8mm lens for this one. Thanks.

No I didn't invert colors....it's an off white but with the shadows from the smoke etc I guess it looks darker. Thanks

I put a folded small piece of aluminum foil underneath the skull and the magnesium actually went out pretty quickly so I didn't have much time. Funny you should say that though, because in the shot with the wooded box, it did burn through and started the box on fire!.....gave me more smoke though
